One week on from the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti that has claimed an estimated 50,000 lives and left over 3 million people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, UNICEF Ireland will hold a candlelight vigil in the grounds of Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin on Tuesday evening, 19th January 2010 at 5.00pm to allow the Irish public to come together and show their solidarity for the victims of the Haitian Earthquake.
The vigil will start at 5.00pm and candles will be provided to all who attend. The event will happen against the backdrop of the bells of Christchurch Cathedral being rung at 5.15pm.
The vigil will be non-denominational and is open to everyone to attend.
"We want to hold this event to give everyone an opportunity to come out and show their solidarity for the people of Haiti and to remember all those who have lost their lives in this tragedy" said Melanie Verwoerd, Executive Director of UNICEF Ireland "We want to show the Haitian people that we are thinking of them and will do whatever we can to support them in this, their darkest hour."
UNICEF Ireland is very grateful to the Dean and staff of Christchurch Cathedral for helping them organise this event.
