UNICEF is distributing life-saving supplies in this vast strip of semi-arid land in north-central Africa, but additional funding is needed. The lives of many hundreds of thousands of children and their families are now in danger.

More than one million children are in danger of becoming severely malnourished in the Sahel region of Africa.
UNICEF and other key global humanitarian organisations are warning of the impending crisis in the Sahel if the international community does not respond. Under-nutrition already poses the greatest risk factor for mortality among young children living there and accounted for at least 35 per cent of all child deaths in the region last year.
