Somalia is continuing to face a severe crisis due to a combination of drought, rising food prices, and ongoing conflict. Famine has now been declared in several areas of the country.
Fortunately, UNICEF has a long history of emergency response work in Somalia, and is currently providing life-saving assistance to hundreds of thousands of children.
Since July, we have sent more than 2,500 tonnes of emergency food to the south, and distributed emergency health supplies to hospitals that will benefit up to 130,000 people.
We will now also be able to provide vaccines for at least 800,000 children against measles, and support for 300,000 children in the form of polio vaccines, vitamin A and de-worming treatments.
Despite this, children are still dying of hunger in Somalia. More than 250 children are dying every day – that's one child every 6 minutes.
