Sanitation is among the most urgent concerns in Haiti following January’s earthquake. UNICEF estimates that overall, 1.1 million displaced people require emergency latrines. The agency and its partners plan to install over 10,000 latrines in the short term and another 20,000-plus within six months.

UNICEF is co-ordinating distribution of more than 3,000 Early Childhood Development kits to Haitian children, particularly those living in displacement camps. Each kit serves 50 children up to six years of age.

A month after the 12 January earthquake that leveled densely populated areas of Haiti, UNICEF Director of Emergency Operations Louis-Georges Arsenault traveled by helicopter over the cities of Port -Au-Prince and Leogane, and on to the southern port of Jacmel. In support of the Haitian Government, UNICEF has provided safe water to the Champs de Mars settlement. The park is a refuge for an estimated 25,000 displaced people. Among them are some of the youngest survivors of the quake, and some who were born after it struck.
