EMERGENCY UPDATE

Afghanistan Earthquake

On 7 October at around 11 am local time, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck 40km west of Herat City in Herat Province, western Afghanistan. Several aftershocks have occurred since lasting over an hour and triggering panic among residents who fled buildings. Initial assessments indicate 100 people have died and 500 people injured, the figures are likely to be much more. There are reports of major structural damage, landslides and people trapped under rubble.

UNICEF is on the ground assessing the full impact, ready to deliver life-saving emergency supplies to children and families in need.

Please donate to support UNICEF’s ongoing work in emergency response and long-term development programs that help better the lives of children and their families in Afghanistan.

13 million children at risk

Afghanistan is in the grip of one of the world’s largest, most complex humanitarian emergencies with 13 million children at risk and in urgent need of your help.

Diseases such as watery diarrhoea and cholera are on the rise and malnutrition rates continue to soar. It’s now estimated that over 1 million children will suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year alone. These children will die without immediate treatment.

Meanwhile the rights of women and girls are further eroded with restrictions to education impacting their opportunities for the future.

Please donate now to help save and protect these children.

What UNICEF is Doing
