Sudan War Enters Second Year

It’s been one year since violence exploded in Sudan, and as the ensuing crisis continues to deepen, the lives, educations and futures of a generation of Sudanese children hang in the balance.

Beyond the direct impact of the violence on children, the ongoing war has fueled a lethal combination of displacement, disease outbreaks and hunger.

Right now, more than 24.8 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 13 million children. Supplies of food, clean water and medicines are running low, while hospitals and schools remain closed or inaccessible.

Families are fleeing their homes in search of safety. Almost 4 million children have been displaced since April 2023, including nearly 1 million children who have crossed into neighboring countries, particularly to Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan.

Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

As conflict continues to rage in Sudan, UNICEF is on the ground providing life-saving food to desperately hungry children, as well as access to clean water and health services.

The recent violence has only compounded the misery faced by millions of children in Sudan. Years of inflation and economic collapse have driven food prices sky-high, while climate change has caused crops to fail.

As a result, Sudan has one of the highest rates of child malnutrition in the world, with more than 4 million children aged under five are suffering from acute malnutrition, including 730,000 suffering from life-threatening severe acute malnutrition.
