On Wednesday Dec 3rd, UNICEF Ireland will travel to Amman, Jordan to monitor the humanitarian situation arising from the Syrian refugee crisis. 5.6 million children within Syria have been caught up in the violence and the resulting poverty and displacement. Almost 1.7 million children have fled Syria and now live as refugees in the surrounding region, particularly in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey & Egypt. The World Food Program (WFP) recently suspended its food aid program to 1.7 million Syrian refugees, due to a lack of funds.
UNICEF Ireland’s delegation will travel to Jordan to assess the situation on the ground. This visit, which provides a critical opportunity to liaise with colleagues working on the front lines, will inform UNICEF’s response to this evolving crisis. The delegation will also visit the Za’athari refugee camp where UNICEF is providing warm clothes, boots & blankets to children suffering the harsh effects of the weather.
