For Every Child in South and Central America

Across the region, children are growing up with strength, resilience, and big dreams — even in the face of poverty, violence, and instability.

For decades, UNICEF has worked hand in hand with families, communities, and governments to protect children and support their wellbeing.

We’ve reunited families, created safe spaces to learn and play, supported children through displacement – and delivered nutrition, healthcare, and education to those in crisis in places like Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala and beyond

Across the region, we’re standing with children – wherever they are.

Standing with children on the move

In 2025, an estimated 4.7 million children across Latin America and the Caribbean need urgent humanitarian support. Many are on the move – forced to flee their homes by violence, poverty, and instability. UNICEF's Child Protection programme helps children feel safe again. We work with communities and partners to create safe spaces, offer emotional support, reunite families, and protect children from harm.

We’re also there for children in contact with the justice system – making sure they are treated with care and dignity.

Because every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and hopeful for the future.

Brighter futures

In Latin America, access to education is key to protecting children from violence, poverty, and forced migration.

UNICEF works with local and national partners to help children stay in school, or return, whether they’re in their home country, displaced, or on the move. For children who have been uprooted, education provides stability, safety, and a chance to belong.

In countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, we support flexible learning programmes that reach out-of-school children and help them reintegrate.

By challenging harmful norms, promoting inclusive learning, and creating safe spaces, we’re helping children build the skills and confidence they need to shape a better future – for themselves and their communities.

Vaccinations

In many parts of Latin America, especially where families are displaced or living in hard-to-reach areas, children are missing out on lifesaving vaccines.

With one child dying every 20 seconds from a preventable disease, reaching these children has never been more urgent.

Together with partners, UNICEF delivers vaccines to even the most remote communities, ensures they stay safe and effective, and helps families understand why routine immunisation matters – so every child can grow up healthy and protected.

Dignity through sanitation

WASH – water, sanitation and hygiene – is essential to children's health, safety, and dignity. It includes things like clean drinking water, safe toilets, and handwashing with soap.

Across Latin America, many children still lack access to these basic services – especially in schools, health centres, and along migration routes. This is due to poverty, weak infrastructure, climate-related disasters, and displacement. Girls, children with disabilities, and those in remote or crisis-affected areas are most at risk.

UNICEF works with governments and partners to strengthen WASH systems and deliver inclusive, safe services – even in the most challenging contexts.

Despite these efforts, nearly 7 million people in the region still needed urgent WASH support in 2024.

From hunger to health

Families in Venezuela are facing food shortages, rising prices, and limited access to healthcare — making it harder to give children the nutrition they need.

UNICEF is working with partners to deliver therapeutic food, promote breastfeeding, and support health services so children can grow up healthy and strong.

Still, in 2024, 9.4% of children under five suffered from acute malnutrition — and continued support is urgently needed.
