Two powerful earthquakes have devastated Venezuela. Children need urgent help.
Two devastating earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck northern Venezuela at approximately 6pm local time last night, causing widespread destruction across affected communities.
Buildings and homes have collapsed, hundreds of people have been injured, and families are spending the night without shelter, clean water or access to essential services.
Children are among the most vulnerable. Many have been injured, separated from loved ones, or are experiencing severe shock and trauma following the disaster. Immediate humanitarian assistance is urgently needed.
A crisis on top of a crisis
This disaster comes at a time when Venezuela was already facing a severe humanitarian emergency.
Years of economic instability have left millions of children and families struggling to access food, healthcare, education and protection services. Rising humanitarian needs, climate-related shocks, population movements and increasing political uncertainty have placed immense pressure on already fragile systems.
Prior to the earthquakes, an estimated eight million people, including four million children, required humanitarian assistance across the country. Essential services were already overstretched, leaving vulnerable communities with limited capacity to cope with another major shock.
The earthquakes have now compounded existing needs and risk pushing even more children into crisis.
