Nine-month-old Ayaan smile's again.
Nutrition: Ayaan is safe and sound in Somalia
Thanks to kind donors who gave to UNICEF’s recent nutrition appeal, children like nine-month-old Ayaan in Somalia are alive today.
Your donations to the appeal, which was generously match funded, have had an incredible impact. They meant that when children like Ayaan were close to death from severe acute malnutrition, UNICEF-trained health workers had the emergency food needed to save their lives.
“Ayaan stopped breastfeeding for no reason and had a fever and a runny tummy,” recalls Ayaan’s mother, Hamdi.
It was a mother’s worst nightmare. Ayaan couldn’t eat. She lost weight from the bouts of diarrhoea. She became so weak, she could barely summon up the energy to smile.
At a UNICEF-supported health centre, Ayaan was diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition. It’s one of the top threats to child survival. A lack of food leaves children at risk of life-threatening diseases. Hamdi was desperate to save her child – with the support of a UNICEF team, and sachets of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food, she managed to get Ayaan the help she needed. Support like yours made this happen.
“I feel so happy now that Ayaan is getting better. Look at her smiling,” Hamdi says now. You can help other mothers feel that same joy and relief today.

Immunisation: Layila is safe from Polio
Five-month-old Layila is smiling and so is her mum Nabila. That’s because Layila has just received her polio booster at a health clinic supported by UNICEF in the West Bank, Palestine.
Immunisation is one of the most effective ways to protect children from preventable diseases and helps every generation survive and thrive.
Thanks to amazing generosity like yours, UNICEF helps vaccinate over 400 million children against polio every year – bringing the world ever closer to eradicating the virus.
This is the life-saving and lasting impact your gift has on children’s lives. Thank you!

Innovation: How play helps recovery
UNICEF has teamed up with LEGO® and Ikea to include toy designs on Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food cartons.
Cut-out cars and airplanes, balls and rocking teddy bears help children regain physical strength, learn important motor skills and develop emotionally and socially. All under the supervision of trained health workers.
Isn’t it brilliant that donations like yours are helping children to recover from malnutrition by encouraging them to play and have fun?

UNICEF staff spring into action in Venezuela
Around the world: Reaching Venezuelan children in just 72 hours
UNICEF’s humanitarian warehouse in Copenhagen is the biggest in the world and sends emergency aid to millions of children every year.
Eight giant robots work in loading bays the size of three football pitches – enough to store up to 36,000 pallets of life-saving supplies at any one time.
Within 72 hours of two massive earthquakes hitting Venezuela in June, UNICEF was able to get the first plane of supplies into the country.
Thanks to generosity like yours, we mobilised enough supplies to reach a total of 100,000 people in the first week with therapeutic food, clean water and medical care.
In times of crisis, your gift and our expert staff allow us to rapidly and effectively deliver life-saving aid to the children who need it most.
